March Newsletters: Master of Two Worlds
We see the hero achieve a balance between who he was before his journey and who he is now.
Often, this means balancing the material world with the spiritual enlightenment he’s gained.
Happy March, Astro New Year, Women’s History Month!
Spring has poked her toe out. Though I’m still wearing long sleeve shirts, the bite of winter isn’t as harsh, almost nonexistent. As I write this, it’s still Pisces season so I’m in my feels, but the other two Ps in my life (Prozac and Prayer) are working!
My grandmother is moving back home and there's a slight renovation going on. Nothing major, just making a garage into a bedroom. In the six months she was in a facility, I missed her smile. That little half smirk when she wasn’t in the mood but wanted to show me she found my joke entertaining. She’s originally from Harlem, New York and though she was born after The Renaissance, one of my favorite things to listen to is her recollection of those less than four miles.
A year ago, I couldn’t have imagined feeling good about living the multigenerational experience again. The worst of her dementia symptoms has to be the meanness in her verbal lashing of my mother mostly. Every once in a while, when I’m trying to be a peacemaker, I get it too. With what I’ve learned and changed in recent months, I’m able to understand her a bit better. This isn’t to excuse her poor behavior but to manage my reactions to it better.
Now, more than ever, leaning into community is the only way we’ll get through these next four years. I started using the hashtag #WeKeepUsSafe for the Holding Space event for my non profit organization Tampa Bay Black Lesbians.
So many moments, I’ve viewed as obstacles to my truth to realize that this has been the plan all long even amongst the despair, confusion, frustration. How has your future self, current self, and past self intertwined to make you who are you?
